Pt. 2

I found these chapters really interesting. We see Winston becoming more aware of the psychological manipulation he had been under, even though he thought himself above it for so long. Especially as O'Brien and Julia seem to be taking his side, and he learns from Julia that many Party members rebel in their own small ways, we see Winston's confidence growing with each day. He goes from being someone afraid to sit by Julia at a cafeteria table to meeting with her often in a room they've rented solely for that purpose. What particularly stood out to me was that this confidence starts a ripple effect-- with the confidence he won't be caught comes an interest to actively learn about the Brotherhood and oppose Big Brother, as well as learn about pre-revolution times. His memories finally comes back, and we can see Winston slowly unravel the influence of the party in his head throughout these chapters. We see him relax and become more carefree, likely a result of Julia's influence on him. Winston goes from being extremely careful while he rebels (like when he starts writing in the diary) to being careless as he feels the invisible support of other rebels behind him-- which eventually results in his demise.

Even with the foreshadowing of them getting caught (the constant reassurance within each other, for example), I was still really surprised when it happened.

What was one part that caught you off guard from this week's reading?

  1. I think it is interesting how Winston has changed from literally hiding in a corner in order to write his journal, for fear of getting caught, to later taking massive risks to meet with Julia. Now that his visions of O'Brian have materialized and her realizes that there is some sort of hope, he has all the confidence in the world to rise up, which may end up being a downfall.

  2. I definitely agree that there were a lot of plot twists, and they were mostly caused by Winston being reckless. What surprised me the most was the series of betrayals that occurred, although it is probably more normal in the context of their world.

  3. One thing that caught me off guard in this part was how quickly Winston gained confidence from learning about other individuals who were rebelling. As Alex pointed out, Winston's sudden shift from secretly writing in a journal to his reckless actions fueled by overconfidence was quite jarring. I personally wasn't too surprised by the consequences of Winston's recklessness. He had it coming.

  4. Yea I was also caught a bit off guard when Winston did a complete one-eighty. Winston has always had the urge to rebel, but he used to be so anxious about it, but now it honestly seems like Winston has a death wish and wants to be caught by the Party.
