When Winston starts practicing doublethink, I realized that it’s something taught from a young age or actively instilled into the population until it becomes involuntary. Moreso, it's interesting that Winston was able to consciously avoid practicing doublethink. Even if he experienced the transition between post and pre-revolution in that he wasn't brought up experiencing double think, he has to have been around for long enough to be surrounded by it, since there was a point where he couldn't even remember his childhood memories. I think one of the most interesting aspects is that to learn how to doublethink, you have to doublethink for the first time-- you just blindly go with what the party tells you to.

I wonder if Winston's ability to dodge the doublethink mob mentality has to do with working for the Party. He actively works in rewriting history to fit the Party's standards, and seems like he takes pride in it (at least at one point). Is he somehow immune and more aware of doublethink because he's in that environment where he knows what's happening? Or maybe because of the timing that the Party was formed?

  1. I wondered the same thing! How was he so resilient?! I know I would definitely not be able to resist but I think Winstons life has been hard enough that he can take anything!!

  2. That is interesting. The doublethink thing does feel like an all-or-none. People blindly accept everything the Party accepts and just plain refuse to see new information -- but if, like Winston, they can see new information, they can't help questioning Big Brother, at least until they end up at the Ministry of Love...
