Handmaid's Tale pt 1
Looking at the characters who have actively experienced the harsh transition from their old life into this utopian environment is always the most interesting-- mostly because they had the most to lose. They have the most motivation to try things, one way or another. And in a way, we see this in Offred. Even though the first few chapters are primarily used to set the scene and establish all the characters, we can see Offred’s memories and her old lifestyle try to edge her out of her life as a handmaid. We see this when she flirts with the Guardians and we also see this when she imagines what she could do to leave this place (get the Angels to turn around, etc.)
Another piece of the story that’s interesting is the explanation of how Gilead came to be-- it was an extreme and inappropriate action to a problem that had countless other solutions. I wonder if the change was sparked through revolution.
What do you think? What has been the most interesting piece of the story to you so far?
